Caylin Payne

In the summer of 2020 I co-founded a business called "Payne Surf & Skate". As the Product Design Engineer of the company I focused on designing and prototyping concepts in order to meet the users wants. The shortened version of the development process for the Embedded LED Light Skateboard is summarized by the images and text below.

User Centered Research

Over the past couple of years there has been an increase in longboard/skateboard sales. These boards are necessary for transportation around schools, cities, and residential areas. Not only are boards used for transportation, but they are also used as a sport, hobby, or social event for users. Users stated that they were interested in new concept skateboards such as the electric skateboard, and are starting to turn away from the more traditional boards.

Wants/Constraints

The wants and constraints were generated and prioritized based on the data collected from user-centered research and the benchmarking process. The wants and constraints are described below in prioritized order.

First Prototype

After analyzing the background research and goals for the wants and constraints, a model was then drawn up in SOLIDWORKS for the board design.

This prototype board was modeled to incorporate many different wheel sizes due to the curvature at the nose and tail of the board. This feature prevents wheel bite, which could be a potential danger to the user. Thin channels were cut on both sides of the top and bottom of the board to allow room for the LED light strips to fit within the board and be secured with resin. A slight fillet was placed around the board for style purposes (use round over bit).
